Default Various questions..

I have various questions that I'd like to be answered. I'd love it if many persons could share their opinions on the game, just so that I can compare and reflect over it myself.

1. Since the "primary" profession defines what the character looks like, but you can still modify the different parts of the character itself, is it possible to look like a necromancer and such, even though you choose a profession such as warrior?
2. Can you play solo to gain experience, or do you have to be in a party on a higher level to gain a better amount of experience?
3. Can you choose your equipment when creating the character? I was wondering since I saw a character creation screen where you could see equipment, the equipment color, etc..
4. Does it take a long time to reach the maximum level?
5. How is the RP/PVP community? are there alot of "lol, n00b, u suck!!!" -people?
6. What differs Guild Wars from other MMORPG's such as Wow, Lineage2, etc?
7. The quest system is supposed to be based on something "new". What's so "new" about it?
8. What positive, respectively negative sides are there in Guild wars? What's good about it/bad?

I appreciate all opinions and answers.

have you actually played Guild Wars? Most of those questions should be answered in the 1st 30minutes of play - but theres much more to the game than you'll initially think.

No, I have obviously enough not played Guild wars, thus the questions.
I really would like to know what differs Guild wars from other MMORPG's.
I do not know if I am willing to risk 40$ for it.
And yes, I do think that some people on this forum are able to answer more or less of those questions

1. Since the "primary" profession defines what the character looks like, but you can still modify the different parts of the character itself, is it possible to look like a necromancer and such, even though you choose a profession such as warrior?

Not to my knowledge. Necro will look like a necro and a warrior will look like a warrior always. Remember, the second profession just rounds your skills, it doesn't change your appearence. You can change their appeareces with new armors and dyes to customise your character though.

2. Can you play solo to gain experience, or do you have to be in a party on a higher level to gain a better amount of experience?

Yes, playing solo is very doable in this game because of NPC "henchmen" that you can take on your quests/explorations. In escense, a party of bots if you can't or won't team up with real player.

3. Can you choose your equipment when creating the character? I was wondering since I saw a character creation screen where you could see equipment, the equipment color, etc..

No, the new characters all start looking the same, their main class look/color. You can color them later with dyes, though.

4. Does it take a long time to reach the maximum level?

Depends on your playing stile. Serious gamers could reach it in a week or two. It could be considerably longer for casual players, though. It depends on your level of focus. If you quest constantly, you can't help but to advance. if you just like to explore and chat, then it'll be a while. Nevertheless, it'll never be anything like EQ, AC, WoW, etc...

5. How is the RP/PVP community? are there alot of "lol, n00b, u suck!!!" -people?

L33t sp3ak is a sign of the times, not maturity level. Yes, there are some l33t hax0rz types, like in any other game of this type, but because of the game design you don't have to suffer it for long.

6. What differs Guild Wars from other MMORPG's such as Wow, Lineage2, etc?

They do not compare. EQ, AC, WoW, DAoC, etc... have "persistent worlds" where everyone exists at the same time. GW is not like that at all (see below.)

7. The quest system is supposed to be based on something "new". What's so "new" about it?

In a word: instanced zones. You can only interact with other no-party players at outposts like cities, forts and academies. However, when you leave them to do your exploring/questing you only leave with your party members. The whole zone is yours, so you'll never be shut out by loot farmers, or deal with a depopulated zone because someone wiped it out.

8. What positive, respectively negative sides are there in Guild wars? What's good about it/bad?

Good: instanced zones, henchmen, collected/crafted-only armor, no time sinks, and instant travel between outposts from anywhere.

Bad: Lack of players in the adventuring world. While instancing gets rid of the negative aspects of zone cohabitation, it also gets rid of the good parts. Things like getting directions, a quick hand with a tough mob, replacing a player that had to suddenly leave, or getting a few quick buffs from higher lvl players are not available under this system.

In the balance I think it's well worth it. The game doesn't charge a monthly fee, and you're guaranteed that you can accomplish goals, in accordance to your lvl and skill, without having to depend on others, or punch a guild clock.

1. Well, maybe if you're really creative. Like, to make a warrior look like a necro, if your character had really pale skin (problems with this: the lighting of guild wars makes it hard to see a pale character) and maybe some green and black (ohh boy) dye, you could make him look a wee bit more evil.

2. Soloing with henchmen is perfectly doable. Soloing alone might be a challenge, but perhaps its possible to lure individual enemies away from a mob in World 2.

3. Answered already.

4. Don't know, I'm taking my sweet time. Been fighting Charr in world 1. Level 9.5 mes/necro. Am I insane?

5. You'll find lots of arrogance and pride in online games. Especiall competetive games. But even so, its not too much of a case. I havn't been bothered much.
Theres also the arena.

6. Obvious difference (the name *guild* + *wars*
Havn't played many other mmorpgs so I cant say much.

7. Answered already.

8. Goods: answered already. Also, skills are pretty neat. A lot of combinations. Dual professions. Deep use of skills.
Warring with other guilds. Arenas. Its free.
Bad: lots and lots of people who rush through the game to get to level 20. Dont bother to experience the game for what it is, and explore.

Game has much less of a focus on exploration. Or perhaps, not enough of a focus. For the people like me who take the time to clear out the entire northern frontier, or explore the entire catacombs, you don't find much of a reward. Except the fuzzy warmth of the accomplishment.

Rather, most areas have the purpose of being part of a mission of some sort.
